hot lunch pouch

My friend needed a pouch to keep her daughter's lunch warm. I made up this little thing for her. And now....a wee tutorial...
I chose an outer fabric, liner and a middle layer that is a heat insulator type of thing. (sorry, I can't remember the proper name for it. Henceforth, it shall be named heat insulator.) I cut the fabrics 9.5x15 inches.

with wrong sides together and the heat insulator in the middle, I began to sew lines to quilt it.

I used the fancy attachment on my machine to help keep the lines straight.

After sewing a few lines, the back started to bunch up, so I turned the attachment and the fabric around to sew from the other end. Still the same problem. I think my feed dog was going faster than my top. I'm hoping to get a lesson at the store where I got my machine to learn a few things.

After a bit of trimming,

I cut the piece in half to get 2, 9.5 x 7.5 inch pieces.

I was trying to decided whether to use binding on the top and use velcro or whether to put a zipper up there.

I went with the zipper.

Broke a zipper on my serger while trying to make the inside neat. Boxed the corners and then broke a needle on my sewing machine. Did I mention that this project took way took much time?

Sewed up the sides, turned right side out.

A bit of ribbon in the zipper. There ya go, a hot lunch pouch.

Let's hope it works as well as the oven mitt she was using before!

Orzo roasted veg salad

I had this dish a few summers ago while visiting a friend in Nova Scotia. It is easy and brings memories of warm summer fun! Remember those times? brrrr here.

I cut up some zucchini, various colours of peppers for some happy, mushrooms, and grape tomatoes. If you have more veggies that tend to roast well, go for it. I forgot to add some kind of onion, sweet or green for me. I put cut veggies into a large bowl and seasoned with olive oil, kosher salt, pepper and garlic powder. ( I was being too lazy to go to the basement to get fresh garlic from our stash.) Put it in a roasting dish and into a 350 degree oven. I just check on it every once and a while. I don't like it too mushy as it will continue to cook after you remove it from the oven.

Oh, and the most bestest part of alllllllll... goats cheese with pesto. We have homemade pesto that I hoard. The goat's cheese gets it. It is also good on cranberry garlic bagel wafers. yum!!! Mix it up and put pieces into the orzo and roasted vegetable mix. it can be served cold, warm or room temperature.

Can I get a little personal here? Throughout my adult life, I've always had trouble with my belly. Many tests in university showed nothing. Over the years, the pain and symptoms would change and most recently, it has been bloating. So much bloating that even drinking a glass of water or a morsel of food would bloat me as if I was 6 months pregnant. And the pressure on the upper stomach, under the diaphram was intense. Last fall, I started drinking a a generous teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and a teaspoon of honey in warm water 1st thing in the morning. All was well. I stopped doing it around Christmas time. This past week, the pain returned. I'm not saying the vinegar/honey thing sured me, but I forgot I had those problems.

This week, when the flare up returned, I decided not to just let it be and to do something about it. I decided to go gluten free. I stopped eating things with wheat. I went out and bought some gluten free bread, cookies, cereal and different flours to do my own baking. In a word, I dropped a load of $$$ to help my belly.

The next morning, as my husband was going out the door, he said, "google 'Yeast in the gut'". So I did. And the symptoms were more similar to mine. I ate gluten free bread and green tea for breakfast. I could feel the bloat coming on. In the car around lunch time, I had rice cakes. Full on bloat! It hurt. When I was chatting with Rafael's hairdresser, she said she had similar problems and that I should try Bio-K. I bought the probiotic in liquid/yogurt form rather than pill. I drank it in the car and as I was coming home, I could feel it working! BLESSED BE THE LORD! IT WAS WORKING!!!!! I could feel the rumblings in my upper belly and the bloat deflating. It was such a relief. And almost instant! And it lasted. I went to a house party last night, ate lasagna, cake, cake and more cake and a fruit punch with fizzy soda in it and was kind of ok. Much more ok than if I had not had Bio-K working for me. Before I went to bed, I drank a 1/4 of the small bottle of bio-k and all was well.

So here's my regimen, 1st day, one whole bottle. 2nd day, 1/2 bottle, 3rd and subsequent days, 1/4 bottle for maintenance. I'll see how that goes for the 6 bottles I bought and play it by ear after that. I'm curious to see how different foods and time will do to my upset digestive system. I'll let you know too if you want. I feel so much better. now, I can focus on the rather large and spreading muffin top at the gym!

Yarn Along

I've been reading Ginny's blog, Small Things for some time now and would drool a little in awe on Wednesdays when she had the Yarn Along.
Like many, I get the knitting bug in the colder weather. I can't read a pattern, but wanted to make something other than a scarf. I enlisted my knitting fanatic friend ( I have many actually) to teach me how to knit socks.
She suggested a ribbed sock and let me raid her wool stash. I chose to go bulky to make the experience a little more positive by being able to knit it up faster.

But I was left on my own to try the next phase. Like I said, I don't read patterns (yet) and messed it up a bit. There are 4 needles on there right now. I have a feeling it was only supposed to be 3. I took the sock to my rehearsal last night. It's amazing how many knitters there are about. 2 came directly to me and started chatting it up. My eyes got that glazed, fear look to them. They recognized it and offered to help, but the rehearsal resumed.

The sock has been in my bag all day. Hoping it wouldn't unravel and that I would have a moment to sit with someone in the know. Not to be today.

So I'll just look at the close ups. Ain't it purdy?
Oh, the needles are from the stash my grandmother had. I inherited them. A great stash. Anything you need in there.

The book I'm reading, but not in the past week or more, is the Scotiabank Giller Prize winner this year, Half -Blood Blues

A good book. Not something I would normally go towards, but it's keeping me interested and letting my imagination grow.

And nice bookmark from Marie over at Soft Earth Art. I won her fall giveaway and she sent some extra postcards and book marks. lovely.

Niagra Falls magic

This weekend, my father in law treated us all to a trip to Niagra Falls. We had a great time in the hotel overlooking the falls.
Here's the view from our room window:

It was early morning and the sun poked out for a few minutes.

It wasn't too cold, but it created lots of ice and mist. Magical.

Here's the view of the American Falls.

We also got treated to "Journey Behind the Falls" none of us had ever done it before. It wasn't as I expected, but interesting none the less. We were happy it wasn't summer with the lines, humidity and heat.

They have small portals to look out, just next to the falls.

Here's a look at the other side.

We travelled further along the tunnel to some openings.

The rushing water was amazing. It was behind the falls. It's hard to see with all the white, but it is water. falling. Over 1.5 million bathtubs worth of water falls every second. Now that's a lot of water.

Mind numbing, the facts they give you.

Incredible nature.

It was nice to see it in the winter time.
And it was a good weekend with family.

I'm very late with a newborn present for my friend who's baby was born last fall. But I wanted to do something with a little extra oompf, as i know she will appreciate the extra time. I've decided to make a better version of my
Eensy Spider block

I'm taking my time and making extra stitches. I want this project to be for me. Not a rush to get something into some one else's hands and check it off the list.
Oh, and when you leave your camera lying around, you never know what will show up. Like I said, Club Penguin is big around here.

It's a raging snow storm outside. I don't know how long it is to last, but I'm home a lone, in the silence and warmth and will now go to my sewing room to create.

Some new books from the library for inspiration

I love this button calendar. that would take a bit of time and patience, but I can imagine some extra buttons with a bday cake on it or other holiday buttons.

I like the shape of this mobile. Worth a go for newborns.

This book has some fun things. But boy, would it take some time to make. All. Hand. Sewn.

I was trying to figure out how to cheat on some things, but nope, hand sewing would be better.

Yep, the library is great to check out some inspiration without committing to buying.
These days, I'm all about the quest for inspiration and a little short on actual doing. Maybe if I cleaned my room of the mountain of sweaters?

Love that little fuzzy, bent ear.

Here it is hangin' with the cat. They won't be together for long. They're jammin' it up as much as they can.

I went and got myself into a musical production of Hello Dolly. I used to do musical theatre when I first moved here, but haven't done it since I met my husband 12 years ago. It seems kind of strange to go back into this. the last time, I was single, young, childless. Basically, just me, to do whatever I wanted, where ever. Now, 12 years later, I'm married, got kids and am just that much more grown up. Oh, and I'm over 40. Anyone else over 40 have that "I don't give a crap" thing goin' on? You know, your filter is not always on and you just don't care (within reason) what other people think. I heard it happened at 40. now I'm living it. Kind of liberating somehow. My husband got it too last year. He didn't understand what I was talking about. Now he does.
Anyhow, I digress. Point is, it should be interesting to be involved in something that will take up my time and take me away from my family on a regular basis. Show's in late March. i'll tell you more as we get closer.

Last fall, I made this

for a birthday present for a 1 year old. (Pattern from Betz White's Warm Fuzzies)
I've decided that it will be THE gift for 1 year olds. I seem to have a few of them in my life these days.
This one's for Caleb...A cool cat who started walking at 9 months! 9 Months! The third child. This little bitty thing, walking/teetering/falling/getting back up and going on again, 9 months. Too little to see if you weren't looking down! Bless his mama. My nerves would be shot! :}

Ahhh, look at that stitching and the fibres of the wool. Isn't it bea.u.ti.ful? It makes me feel calm. You too? Or am I just weird? ( please don't answer if you're one of my non-crafting friends who's eyes glaze over when asked about my new sewing machine! lol)

I made the tongue from 2 pieces of 100% wool felt. I sewed them together in a tongue shape, then cut it out from the rectangle.

He's a happenin' dude doncha think?

Next time, I'll show you the cool pink doggie from the same book.

smell the newness

Did I tell you I bought her here? At Sewing World, where the customer service is amazing. Tell Teresa I sent you!
My favorite, I didn't know I needed/wanted/what I was missing things on this baby,
Variable speed: this baby can go really fast! It's great for straight sewing. like the curtains I have to sew this afternoon. Looking forward to that run it through without thinking.
Needle Position: you can end with the needle up or down. every time. Handy. it took a bit of an adjustment to wait for the needle to go back up. but I'm used to it now. I do need to work on sewing in a small circle. Now that the needle doesn't just stop, my circle is not even. Not sure how to go about this. When i really need it, guess I'll work on it then.
One touch button hole maker: need I say more? I haven't used it yet, but I'm sure I will.
Noise level: it is pretty quiet and smooth. nice for late night sewing. The kids room is directly below me with a grate in the floor.
Anything that will help with the noise level is a bonus for me/them.
A brute: Sewing thick mittens has not been a problem. Flows like butter. The arm can also lift higher for extra thick things. nice.
Auto Needle Threader: Yep, just pull over a little thingamabob and it threads for you. Now i don't have to bother with finding my glasses if it's a quick trip upstairs.
Warranty: There is a 2 year everything warranty. Then a 17 year warranty for something else. i have to check the fine print.
Classes: I get free classes for life! (a deal from the place where I got it. Probably not the case elsewhere) I will sure go a few times to see what other amazing stitches it has.
Stitches: blind hem, serging? really? maybe I can sell my serger? and a triple zig zag stitch. Auto bobbin tension. and it doesn't need oiling.

There ya go. A few things of note upon using it for 1 day.

peaceful wishes

With a little help from Stampin' Up stamps and some shipping tags, we made a batch of wishes for 2012.

After our traditional New Year's Raclette of course.

This pile o spools and buttons came from a garland a la Martha Stewart. I love thrift shops!

Then we put the spools on. The buttons wouldn't go on with the thick string, so we left them off.

Then we hung them up with out snowflakes. It looks a bit messy, but the kids like to read them and find their wish. We left a few blank to add more when they come to us.

And many peaceful wishes to you for 2012. Thanks for joining me this past year(s) and hopefully more in 2012.

cardinal ornaments

My Uncle gave me a few cardinal ornaments. The cardinal, as I may have mentioned before, is special to me. My grandmother made all of her children (7) and her grand children (maybe 15 or more at the time?) a tree skirt (will take a picture another time) with a cardinal on it. I have made a few exactly the same in my time. So here is an ornament with a cardinal on it.

Ontario Science Centre

Today, we went to the Ontario Science Centre It's only about 12 minutes from us and my uncle got us a membership for Christmas! I'm so happy. The kids are so happy. And we got free parking and IMAX movies. (My husband will have to take them to that. I would just throw up. Don't like all that stimulation)

So today was just a quick 2 hour visit to check in and take a venture around.
Here is a picture of Newfoundland. Where I'm from. The south West coast,(bottom left) is Port Aux Basques. You can see, there are a lot of mountains.

Neve was particularly enjoying this exhibit. Me too.

And this one was fun. I think this is her alter ego.

Normally, I wouldn't take my camera. Inside darkish places don't work for me. But I just took my new Prime telephoto macro lens. Nice. Clap Clap.
Yesterday, I spent the WHOLE day in my PJS and hardly got up. Just enough to put some laundry in. And I read a new book in 1.5 days. And I think I had 2 or 3 naps. Thankful that my family let me do such.

Maybe I'll feel like crafting soon.

Happy Christmas!

Hope you had a kind of day you were hoping for. I did!
Here is the loot ready to go to the teachers at school. What else? mittens and roving angels!

I must have been a good girl this year. I got something I didn't even know I wanted. A new lens for the camera. A prime telephoto macro lens. it's beautiful. It does just what I want it to do. So now, I'll have some photos and posts for the blog in the long days of winter. Here's a sample:
Olives that Henry cured for the last 8 weeks.

A tree shot at my cousin's house. Only tree lights. no flash, etc. I'm so happy with my new lens.

Daddy has been acclaimed the best and resident face painter.

With one happy girl. This paint is by Snazaroo Awesome quality and it washes off very easily.

So now I get to relax for a few days. Have a few naps, eat a few cookies, have some Hot turkey sandwiches, cups of tea and just general slothiness before I feel like tackling my sewing room I still have more mittens to make for family and families of friends. then I will focus on some new ideas in my head.

teen tulle

Knock, Knock....
Anybody there? thanks for coming back.
It's been a crazy few weeks and it's almost over! It's all been good. 5 craft fairs/shows and every one of them had crazed mitten wantin' moms. I stopped making mens and childrens and just made mom mitts. I must have made over 150 pairs and I still have about 20 to make before this week is over. I'm loving it. Sweater mittens rock! Oh, and the singing at private parties, malls, social clubs, corporate dos and general fa la la-ing where ever merriment is requested.

So today, I finished up another order for a tulle skirt for a pre-teen. After making this, I may make a few more.

One of the moms in our group used to make real tutus and dance costumes for shows/competitions. She showed me some tricks of the trade which has me excited to try more. Did you know it's a ll the rage right now? Tulle skirts over leggings. Where have I been?

I'll take this time to wish you a Happy Christmas! I may get back here, who knows? I know I won't be sewing anything new until after Christmas. I have a few ideas I can't wait to try. If my camera cooperates, if the planets align and the sunlight is good... I'll take more pictures.

bunch o monkeys

I made these cute little guys for the kids in my preschool music class. I love the arms and how they swing all over the place. The arms of the monkeys and the kids. It was a fun bunch. The magical age of 2, when they are coming into their own and getting a vocabulary. O how they grow from the beginning to the end of the 12 week session.

Remember the lion I gave out a few sessions ago?

Easy hand stitching and a bit of machine sewing.

What else have I been doing? Making a few more Maisies from the book More Softies Only a Mother Could Love.

And bit of singing. These costumes are exclusive to this particular mall. The large, huge, ginormous mall that doesn't look like a mall until you're halfway through it. Fun to sing though.

oh, and getting ready for a few shows this coming week. It's closer than I thought. boo.

Christmas Ornaments-Das style

I had this great idea in my head to make white clay ornaments. I went on a hunt for white clay. Bought some, it was grey. it dried grey. I tried white sculpty, it's too soft and unforgiving of little prints and mistakes. So i sought out Das. Remember Das modelling clay? Bet you forgot about the smell!! Not so bad, it just brought me back to my childhood. SO, I bought white, opened it up, it was grey. I closed it up and sulked. Then I decided to take a little piece and let it dry. it dried white! Yippeeeeeee!!

After borrowing my friend's stash of cookie cutters, (thank goodness, I have no idea where mine are) I went to work with the addition of some stamping supplies.

I'm in love. And I've hardly made a dent to what's in my head and the endless possibilities and combinations of my tools.

Like, I'm going to add some rhinestones to the edges of the snow.

And I want to add glitter to some and use a glassy glaze on top of the glitter.

Just wondering though, should I put a glossy varnish on it? So it will catch the tree lights?

it's a cat

This belated birthday present for a 1 year old is from Betz White's Warm Fuzzies. Guess I'm really liking that book lately and the fact that I've been collecting 50-11 sweaters for the last month or so. It's just a little break from the mitten making.

It was easy to make, just a little confusion on the sewing the front to the back, but it won't be a bother next time. Kind of an
a-ha moment shall we say.

Here's another blurry picture. Of the mouth. I tell ya, this time of year, and maybe for the winter, my camera bites! I can't even get a decent picture unless the sun is shining. ugh. smile, breathe, think pretty, focused thoughts.

And the back of it. Yes, green is a strange colour for a cat, but it was workin' for me that day. All the colours and swatches came together. he's fancy.

And here is a request to be added to the post. Rafael is quite proud of his gnome friends and the big dipper in the sky. He wanted you to notice the big dipper. Do you notice?

mini cupcakes

Cupcakes anyone? Partially done cupcakes? they contain less calories!

These come from Betz White's book Warm Fuzzies. I made them tree ornament size and put a little needlefelted ball on top. The others will have beads instead.

I took all kinds of artsy fartsy pictures to show you, but my camera didn't cooperate. fuzzy..... grrr. I makes me crazy that camera.
Anyhow, it's that time of year, time to bury the fig tree. Fig trees cannot survive the Canadian Winter (as mild as it is in Toronto) so it is the custom to bury it. The root ball is small, so you dig it up and bury it a few feet in the soil. Then a layer of leaves to help insulate. Oh, the fig tree is in the burlap. And, I don't know what we'll do when it gets to big to bury in our little garden. Figure that out when we get there I suppose.

ribbon hairbands

One of the local fabric stores (it's the only one that is less than a 10 minute drive, everything else is at least 30 minutes, dragola) has the most amazing ribbon section. Just beautiful designs.
I got inspired by a plain headband I bought at the dollar store and pumped it up a notch.

Aren't they just gorgeous?

Oh look, mini tutorial!
Adjust lengths to the size of head, but this works for me and for my 5 year old. Cut ribbon 13 inches. The elastic is 6.5. Again it depends on how much the elastic stretches. I cut the original the same as the dollar store one, but it was too tight as my elastic is a better quality and doesn't stretch so much. Please note: Elastic needs to be thinner than the ribbon.
With the elastic on the right side of ribbon, fold the ends of the ribbon around the elastic as below. Sew a little in from the end.

Turn it right side out. Do the same for the other side. There you go. Done!

And if you really want to get silly, try wearing them all at once!

Cinnamon Rolls

This weekend is a blur and it's not even over! I sang for 2 concerts yesterday for Remembrance Day. Nice. Then singing at 2 church services this morning and tonight a sing along for the agency that I Christmas Carol with. it's only 2 days of singing in a row, but after focusing on my family for the last 8 years, I wonder how I ever did it as a singer/music teacher. every. single. day. My whole life was singing. Over all parts of town. now I get wiped after 2 hours! stamina I tell ya, it's gone!

Anyhow, some time this past week, I got to play house mom and made some cinnamon rolls.

The recipe comes from the back of the brown sugar bag and my memory, as I threw it out the bag after the sugar was all gone.
First up is some bread dough. You can use premade pizza dough, or as I did, make it in the bread maker. (recipe at end of post)

Roll it out to a rectangle. Brush some melted butter. They suggest 2 tablespoons.

Mix a teaspoon of cinnamon with 3/4 cup of brown sugar. Spread it on the dough. Please note, I used more cinnamon and did not spread all of the sugar on the dough. This was a mistake! Use all the sugar! It makes it sloppier and gooey-er. Mine, not so much. I added some raisins to one side of it. ( i also used some of the leftover cinnamon brown sugar in my tea. So good.)

Roll the dough from the short side to the opposite end.

Cut them about 1 inch thick.

Place in a greased dish. Let rise for about 1.5 hours until the rolls touch each other. I didn't let it rise long enough. next time I will.

Bake on 350 for 20-25 minutes. I think. I can't remember. Sorry.

There ya go. A nice afternoon treat with a cuppa.

Put it in the bread maker in this order:

1+cup of water. (Sometimes the flour needs more moisture, so I add up to 1/2 C extra sometimes. Depends on the season and where you live)
1 Teaspoon of salt
2 teaspoons of sugar
1.5 tablespoons of olive oil
3 cups of flour
1 teaspoon of bread machine yeast.

Use the dough setting for 1.5 lb bread.

If you want to make a nice pizza dough recipe, use the one above, then add a tablespoon of cornmeal and a teaspoon of dried herbs, ( I use a Newfoundland savory or oregano)

There ya go. This is not a quick treat, but one that can be tended to when you're in the house all day.

At the moment, the kids are playing with boxes brought home from the grocery store. They made cars from them and are now traveling around the world with the maps I printed out of places I've been too. They are at the drive in watching old Pink Panther movies on Net flix. Ah, Sunday afternoon.
DH is in the basement making a brew of beer. He's doing it from scratch, Mad scientist that he is. I'm ok with all this experimenting. It gives me equal footing to get lost in my sewing room from time to time!

I think I'm off for a nap before my next appointment. No crafting for this weary body today.

My Heart is Full sachet

Howdy,
back in the summer, I signed up for a heart swap and this is what my swap partner received, along with a few other goodies.

It is very fragrant with lavender. Maybe a little too fragrant? Just let me say, you can't really iron linen after the lavender has been put in. Thus, it's a little wrinkly. It's a little hard to tell, but the trim on the top and bottom has hearts on it. aahhh.

Yo Yo Trees

This past weekend, My church had it's annual Craft and Bake Sale Bazaar. Now you must understand, the ladies of the craft guild meet once a week for most of the year, making and baking stuff for this grand, most anticipated event. it's where I got the Snow White Doll in the previous post.
And of course, what's a Christmas sale without Christmas tree ornaments? This one made me chuckle. I love it!

A tree made from various colours and sizes of yo yos. Brilliant. They made the yo yos, cut a wine cork in half, put a pipe cleaner into it and threaded the yo yos on to it. Then they glued a wooden star to the top. Easy peasy. And effective.

I Just HAVE to tell you about this great doll I got today at the Church Bazaar. you'll believe that I saw it across the table and practically leapt over everyone beside me to get a better look. You'll not believe that the price tag said $3! only $3.

I tell ya, this doll is amazing! And it's hand made! I kid you not.. At first I thought it was factory made, but the more I examined it, the more hand stitching I could see. All the dwarves are hand stitched together. They eyes, the machine zig zag around the faces and clothes. I tell you, This doll is of the highest quality sewing and it must have taken ages! I'm just so glad that we now own her and that she is truly appreciated!
When you wanna have a party, just add 7 little dwarves.

Weekend Happenings

G'Day!
it's another beauty here. Any warm days after the middle of October are a gift. It's supposed to get to 15 degrees celcius today. Awesome!
We had a a warmish weekend also. good thing, I was selling my wares at an outdoor venue!
Special hi to all who are visiting here from the Fair! Welcome.
Here is my table. i forgot to bring a few things to add various heights to the table. It's rather flat, but tons to look at.

I made a batch of mittens that went like hotcakes. it was just enough chill in the morning before the sun came around the building to want cosy mittens. This is my almost empty basket. I should have taken a picture before to keep the ideas for future mittens. I have since scored with some great sweaters and will be sewing up a mitten storm this week. Another craft fair this weekend.

Here are some clothes and doll slings on a line, with the happy teapot bunting.

Here are some money cuffs to be featured later. I adapted a lunch money cuff from A lemon Squeezy Home

And lastly, Halloween!
Neve decided on 2 costumes to play with. The first is super woman. She has red and gold hairspray in her hair. You could hardly see it, but she was excited just the same. This was for the school-indoors.

For outside, she was a wizard. A few layers went under this costume. And Rafael wanted to be Mario. Homemade is good enough for him. The mustache was attached with 2 sided carpet tape. Let's just say that we learned to make it a little less sticky before applying to the face. ouch. Last year, he was Alvin the chipmunk. Next year, he wants to be an Angry Bird. Lord help me!

And when the Mario is in the washroom, the wizard goes into disguise!

Ogee ornament in many styles

Hello folks!
It's been a while. I've been in a little creative funk. Well, i've been trying some things, but not so successful yet. I think instead of a funk, it's a process of trying and experimenting. So, not much to show.
Anyhow, a few weeks ago, I made these ogee ornaments from felt and heat embossed overhead projector paper. (what's that called again?)

I first got the idea from Betz White a few years ago. Check out her post. It is a most excellent tutorial.

But it was before I delved into the world of good felt. Here's my original post here

This time, I also used Stampin' Up! stamps and heat embossed on the transparency. (there, I remembered). Here's the music one.

And here is the french script one.

I originally wanted to used eyelets to join them together, but I couldn't fit my crop-a-dile in the littlest spot, so I used brads instead.

I experimented with the stitching on the felt ones to make it decorative.

A few french knots. Love french knots.

These beads came from my uncle's stash. He used to make very ornate jester stockings for Christmas with silks and velvet and these beads on the tips. Gorgeous. I claimed the beads from his stash. Looking forward to using these up.

And here they are, swaying in the breeze.

treasures at madrinha's

We got to visit Dh's godmother this weekend. There is always something to be learned, good food to be et, and hand crafted treasures to be looked at.
Here is a typical Portuguese style embroidered bag. it is just so bright, consistent and beautiful.

notice the inside of the heart? You achieve that effect by separating the threads in the weave of the linen and sewing them in this pattern. You don't cut any threads, as it would compromise the fabric. Instead, you pull them to create the holes. Incredible. I'm still in awe of it.

And here is a little hanging that was on the wall. I love the details from the direction of the threads to get the creases in the clothes to the french knots in the boy's top to add texture. I could look at this all day.

Teapot Bunting

This was whipped up for a little party decoration. It was a tea party, hence, the teapot.

I searched for a teapot on Google image and pasted it into InDesign. There may be other ways to enlarge it, but this was the easiest I could think of. Can't waste precious time trying to figure such things out when there is sewing to be done! The original teapot was more wide than tall, so I rotated it to be on the paper sideways and stretched it out. Just right for a triangle bunting.

Instead of cutting the triangles with my straight edged rotary cutter, I used a scalloped edge blade. Softens it up a bit.

The doilies came from Ikea. I knew I would find a use for them.

It was a warm, sunny day. 25 degrees Celsius. A gift really. It was enjoyed.

He did it!

He did it! he did it! He got his 100 kilometer ribbon! He ran over 100K in the past month, just 4 days a week. he is so proud. I'm so proud. we are all so proud! But he's not willing to stop. There are 2 more running days and then he will be going to the area cross country meet. See, he got 15th place in the last area run..

there are only 7 kids from the school attending the next level. yep, so proud.
And check out his new hair!

I did finish up something yesterday. Just have to take pics. I've been cleaning my crap, I mean craft room. Long overdue. Maybe I'll be productive after it's done.

Hangin' or climbin'

Howdy all!
I've made nothing this week! Nothing. Well, I did make supper a few times this week, muffins, cookies, bread. So I guess I did make something, but there is not much left to show for it, but a bigger middle! :}
TO give you something to look at, I present Rafael, the tree climber.

Look in the middle of the tree. He's wearing blue.

Now look up. Waaaay up. Middle to the top....

Monkey to be sure.
He's not just a tree climber, he's a runner. They have Cross Country at school for a month. Every run around the block is a kilometer. Every kilometer, you get a stick. Every 10 sticks, you get a ribbon. Last year, his goal was 100. He made it to 60. We started late. This year, he was ready. We go 4 mornings a week. (I just started running 2-3 kilometers, 3 days a week with him or I should say, I run with Neve)
He runs an average of 4-5 per morning. Then there are 3 gym classes a week where he runs some more in the field. This boy has run over 10 K a day a few times in the last week. He is now at 75K and is so proud of his ribbons. He spent the evening lining up his ribbons from last year and the ribbons from this year on the floor. He only needs 25 more to get his 100! And there are 7 running days left! Plus, he is attending the area meet on Tuesday. I hope they count the 5 K for that! He will be over the moon to get his 100 ribbon. And I will too. He's worked so hard for it. Getting ready early in the morning to get there on time.

On Saturday, I kept sneaking to my very messy sewing room and happily made mittens. Yes, mittens. out of wool sweaters. On a most Awesome warm day of Autumn.

The pattern is from Warm Fuzzies from Betz White. I made a batch last year here I moved the thumb over a little towards the outside of the hand. It just sits a little better.

After a few scores of wool sweaters this summer, I just had to make something out of them.

I look forward to many more combinations of sweaters.

But not the cold days of winter!

Happy Saturday! I just spent the morning, cleaning my kitchen/living room after hosting 4 extra sailors for the past week! let me say, it feels good to have a moment to do such.
Anyhow,
here's a quick pouch for a bday present. The kids like to take their lego mini figurines around with them. this way, they can hook it to their pants and off they go....

What a treasure to own something that was created lovingly by Marie. All of her work exudes magic.

And I just LOVE the acorns. Our acorns don't look like this.

That brings me to an idea or wish I've had for sometime now.... An acorn trade. Wouldn't it be cool to have some acorn tops from a different tree than grows in your neighbourhood? I've only found the one kind around here.
Anyhow, This wreath hangs inside where I can see it everyday. it makes me smile and warms my heart to think of it being created all the way from the other side of the world and traveling here.

Felted soap

I've been looking for a nice soap to make felted soap with. And at a reasonable price. I finally found some made of goat's milk and oatmeal. I love. it. i originally bought a bunch, tried one out and used them all up in the shower without felting them.

I found a supply again and set about to try it out.

After felting with brightly coloured wool and the dye coming out when used, I decided to go with the undyed grey wool and used a few accent colours.

To me, it looks so earthy.

All together now. Not for long.

We went to our veggie garden at an aunt's house today to dig up the rest of our veggies. Quite a haul!

We had fun going, picking and eating the fruits of our planting and tending. Rafael would spend most of his time in the middle of the peas or tomatoes, eating his way though the plant! And what a great pot o soup will come out of this one! I hope it lasts to the cold weather.

This week, instead of being a human being, I've been a human doing. 1st week of school, back to creating routines, trying to sew for an upcoming show. It's been cloudy. Very cloudy. The sun popped out late yesterday and it felt like summer. I wanna soak that in.
Anyhow, all that to say, I've been making, but the sun don't shine and the pictures have not been takin'. Except these...
Something has been enjoying my basil.

See? I have great plans for this sail. Now to take the time to do it. I must. I must.

tomatoes, tomatoes, everywhere tomatoes

Or at least some sort of juice, spluice, mess....
So, you take a few of these burners...

A few boxes of Tomatoes. This is how you buy a bushel these days. Not so romantic. Oh well, we got 2, crazy amateurs.

We blanched them, took the skins off, quartered them and boiled them again. Actually, my husband did all that before I came home from church.

With all the skins left over, he put it through a nifty puree machine to get the pulp. This was half a bushel.

My job was the jarring. Then boiled them for 90 minutes.

Here is a bit of the set up.

Nice and pretty. I hope we did it all right. It will be a tasty winter if we did.

Oh to have strength and better weather to do the rest. It was hotter and more humid than Hades last time. He wants to make sauce out of it.

Heart swap

I signed up for the heart swap this summer. I changed my mind a million times and finally came up with this.

Embroidery on linen. Just what I had envisioned. I had trouble finding a design though. When I finally returned home to my books, I found this one in the pile from a previous Goodwill Trip. Love vintage books.

It is very thorough, showing the patterns for each project made.

And then a treasury of designs in the back as well as the stitch guide.

I took the pattern for these slippers and adjusted it for the heart shape. It actually is heart shaped! I just need to outline it and decide whether to make it a sachet or put it on a 4 inch make your own button. Oh yes, that baby is big!

I think I'll ask my swap mate. Yes, it is late, but we have a mutual agreement. I was a busy summer you know! :}

baby blocks set

While in Nova Scotia, I made my annual visit to Atlantic Fabrics. It has such cool cotton prints and I always find something interesting in the wood section. More on that later.
This time, I couldn't resist the Urban Zoology line of prints. I bought some fat quarters, even though I had no plans for them.
Enter: the baby block and taggie blanket.

Those animals are so cute.

For the cotton blocks, I used an iron on interfacing to help make it stiffer. For the fleece blocks, I used a non sew, stiff interfacing and sewed it to the squares by making the shapes.

One for a girl.....

One for a boy...

Don't forget to put a bit of crinkle ( chip bag) in the taggie blanket and some sort of sound maker in the block. I bought a cat toy with an enclosed bell.

A few nights ago, we had a feast from the ocean. A maritime favorite... lobster!

It would be a shame to come all this way and not have any, you know, to help support the economy.

Let me say, it tasted as good as it looked.

And what do you have as an appetizer for lobster? Caplin of course!

These were caught and salt dried by my uncle in Newfoundland.

Some good tell yer mudder! and smelly on the BBQ. I'm a little picky about the bones when I eat them. But oh so good!

from the water to the valley

I didn't think we would get to go here, but we did on this last day of our vacation. I lived in the Annapolis Valley for 5 years and cried and cried the day I left, almost 20 years ago. Every time I come to Nova Scotia, I try to get to the valley.

The mud flats are part of the Bay of Fundy, the basin of water between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick with a rapid tidal bore. Lovely to look at and to walk the dykes. The smell however at times!??

We stopped at a U-Pick for some apples and a leg stretch.

Sun shining, breeze blowing, sweet smell of apples.

We tried the 2-4 kinds there were in the rows.

And Neve explained how to pick an apple from the tree. She's the expert you know. She learned it last fall on her Kindergarten field trip. A voice of authority!

Tasty.

There were many apple varieties and some weren't ripe yet. We just looked at the bottom of the trees for the windfalls. If there were apples under the tree, they were ready for picking. We tried the fallen apple to see if we liked it or not. The first batch we picked were indeed a baking variety.

Then we found the jersey macs. Yummmy. Sweet and crispy.
But my favorite apple was a rare bright red one amongst a tree of a different type. Sweet and soft.

There were also pears and plums to be picked. We passed on getting them as we ate too many within the last week. We did try the fallen plums though. Warm from the sun and juicy. There were 2 kinds on the same tree. A yellow and a little red one. wee and red.

After everyone had enough apples and sunshine and walking, we went back to pay for them and smelled them all the way home.

A great outing indeed!

Salt Water

Our trip to the Maritimes has seen lots of swimming in the water. Salt water! A lot different than swimming in lake Ontario.
The first dip was a t a cottage rented by a friend in Mahone Bay. What a great night.

There were starfish, hermit crabs, periwinkles and crabs. They touched whatever fancied them.

After a bang up bbq, marshmallows and a cuppa tea rounded out the night.

Beauteous.

Another beach was in Shelburne, Roseway beach. How beautiful.

White, fine, powder sand.

The best thing to do with it is to dig trenches.

And tease the waves.

We went to another beach yesterday, Queensland beach not far from Halifax. The photos are on my phone and I can't find my charger/adapter. Anyhow, it was another fun sandy beach with cooler water, but great waves.
One big difference from swimming at an ocean beach and a lake beach... the tide!! Yesterday, we set up by the water so we could watch the kids easier, but had to move closer to the locals up from the beach when the tide started to come in rather quickly. I'm certain I could hear them snickering when we set up so far down by the water. Now I'm the wiser.

Determination

Last week, Neve wanted her training wheels off of her bike.

Daddy complied and she worked very hard.

In a parking lot, down a hill.

She didn't care that she fell. She jumped up, fixed her dress and said, " I'm ok, I'm not hurt this dress is armour and it protects me." Then off again.

But boy did she have a leg full of bruises the next day. Just one leg, not the other.

Keep that working spirit and determination young lady.

little felties

On this vacation, I only took my felt with me, thinking of making gnomes and some hair clips. While out shopping with my mom, (how nice was that!) I found the book "Felties" by Nelly Pailloux. I had taken this book from the library once, but wasn't in the frame of mind to make wee things. Well, when you only have felt and restless kids, you give them the book and promise to make whatever their heart desires from it.
My friend's son chose the green alien. I made a red one for his brother. You can see it in the final photo.

My son chose the Panda as his 1st request. there is a long list.

My daughter about fell out of the seat when she saw this mouse, so she had to have it.

And another little girl wanted a red lion with blue hair. I like her "thinking out of the box"

These were easy and fun to make. I'm sure I'll be making more to round out their collection. I put lavender in the mouse. It smells so great. I heard them all playing with their softie friends in some other realm, pandas in space and the lion coming to save them all. It was fun to listen to and they were all so proud. When I presented each finished piece to the owner (and they would wait close to me, watching their creation come to life) I would say the following:
"I have made this especially for you to your colours and animal choices. Will you love it? Will you be careful with it? Will you respect it? Will you think of me when you play with it? Will you cry when you lose it?" Of course, all the answers in a row were yes, then the last question always made them stop to think about it! It was funny.

If you get a chance to look at the book, it will make you smile!

road trip!

We're settled in after a 2 day car ride. Not a bad one. Much to be entertained. I was going to have a post on things you see on the road, but my DH wasn't fast enough with the camera. We saw a funny looking car with lots of antenae. it was a storm Chaser. The kids were concerned, thinking there was a storm ahead on a clear blue sky day.
Here is a motorcycle with a side car.

A stop at the 1st Quebec roadside stop. Yeah for playgrounds and big climb-y things.

We slipped down to Vermont, New Hampshire and stopped in Maine for the night. Very pretty countryside. Too bad it was night. The swerving, rolling hills were a little too much for me, but we played tag with the moon. Very full and bright mood guiding us.

The next day was a little rougher to handle. But we tried to make light of it. Little Neve assisted with some of the driving. She wore her pjs for 3 days straight. a bit lazy don't ya think?

Our 1st outing was a trip to the Public Gardens.

There was a bit of ice cream consumed.

And a few ducks wanting her to share.

They had a music program for the day. Swingology. Nice tunes to wander around to. Refreshing and lovely to stretch some road weary legs.

We went to a little harbour today and will go to another tomorrow. Some good fish to be et.

pirates and mermaids

The party loot bags are coming along. I always feel inadequate, so last minute, I decided to make some pirates and mermaids!

The mermaids were from Disney crafts
These are the first ones I made. I changed it up a bit for the rest.

Although there are many steps to complete them, the paint dries quickly so you don't have to wait in between steps.

My favorite is the bandana on the pirate. The pirate is my idea.

They are pirates with heart.

But sometimes..... they have to walk the plank!

We set it up on the trampoline outside with a piece of white fabric on the bottom to catch all the wonderful colour!

They started painting with the ice cubes, but the colour wasn't very vibrant, nor could you really tell what they were painting.

So we decided to draw pictures with a white crayon.

It worked a little better..

but the colour was still dull.

But look at the nice cloth we have now.

We took this big cloth inside. my intent is to cut it up to make some napkins. I have a feeling the colours will wash out.
Here's the sad part of the story... we left the rest of the paintings on the clothes line. It has rained all night and day. No colour anymore, just some crayon markings. But hey! Now we can use the canvas to paint something else.

Little Red dress and cape

The big reveal day is getting closer and I'm still so excited! Her birthday is next week.
I had some red velvety like stuff (do we still call it velour?) in mind for this dress, but no satin or shiny for the bottom. But, I had this grey linen table cloth that I love. And it was big enough for the skirt. Gosh, it sure does take up some fabric for the bottom!

I used the hem of the table cloth as the hem for the dress. That's why it's so long. I also used the fancy stitch on the machine to add some interest.

And here....

this dress did take a long time. Maybe 2 hours. For a doll's dress! I didn't bother to cut a lining for it. I could have made a Neve size in that time. Maybe I will try to find a pattern for her.??
With extra red fabric, a fancy cape was in order...

They didn't make the pattern for big haired dolls! :}

I also made another suit for a reader who wants to barter. 1st time anyone has asked. fun!

For a bit of comparison, both dolls are 18 inches. The Waldorf doll is a little thicker in the arms and then the bigger hands.

The red dress is a modern pattern. If I were to make it again, I would have a smaller seam allowance in the wrist area. I know it will be a problem for her putting it on and off.

All in all, it was a nice way to spend an afternoon alone, in the air conditioning!

Treasure Stones

The parenting Centre, where we frequent, has this activity at times.
It's an altered playdoh with an added bonus. It takes a few days and you get 2 activity times from it!
Here's the recipe:

1 cup flour
1 cup used coffee grounds
1/22 cup salt
1/4 cup sand
3/4 cup water
Mix dry and slowly add water. Knead mixture. Cover little bits and bobs so it's in a ball. Let dry 2-3 days or bake in oven at 150 degrees 15-20 minutes. Let me say, that the baking in the oven takes much longer than that. it's not worth it. let it dry for a few days. Put it on a baker's rack to let the air flow underneath too and turn them over now and again.

Choose your treasures. these are mostly bugs. it was what was close to me in a cup. i didn't feel like getting adventurous and looking for things. there were no complaints.

Here they after more than a few days. i kept the activity until a friend visited.

Actually, a different friend was here for the making of them. She took some home with her.

The various digging implements that you saw from the ice treasures.

And a reward! The doh is still a bit soft in the middle, so it's not so difficult to get out.

Next time, a post about some more clothes I made for the doll. A beauteous red velvet and grey linen dress. All fancy and with a cape too! i got a tremendous amount of time to sew yesterday. Ahhh.... so nice.

mini Toadstool goodness

Last Saturday, Neve and I had a girly day. We went to Michael's and then to First Markham place. It's a chinese mall in Markham. I knew of it b/c I've strolled through the mall on many a Christmas' past in my caroling costume, spreading cheer to all who hear.
Anyhow, we had a good time looking for the good stores. the ones with the little Chinese and Japanese minis.
I couldn't resist buying this....

It came from this box.

It's like a surprise bag. You don't know what you're getting.

I'm so excited! I finished her hair tonight.

I so love her and can't wait to see my daughter's reaction. I'll be sure to document it. I don't think she's ever wanted something more.

I'm 2 weeks early for her birthday. I'm hoping to make a few more outfits and matching dresses for them. ooooo... soooo excited!

I'll put up some photos of each layer of hair that I sewed in another post.

doll face of the Waldorf kind

I got to start the doll face on Friday. Here she is in her birthday suit.

Here is the hair I finally decided on. i love it. Mohair boucle and hand dyed. Gives it great colours and depth. Wool by FibreArtists.

When you put all that hair on, it makes for a very huge head of hair. And curly, just like my daughter's.

Was told, to put the pins in place for the eyes,

then trace. I realized they were not straight, so I took them out, traced it again and thus began the 1 hour attempt to sew symmetrical eyes...

Here was the 1st batch. Wasn't liking the shape they turned out. So i ripped it out.

Here's the 2nd set. It's not symmetrical at all, but they are going to stay. I only had so much time and I'm so done with the eyes.Then there was the mouth. not so easy either.

There you have it, her face. i may just put in a little mole like she has, but may do it with some eye liner. we'll see.
Here's where I entered the head to hide the knots. A long needle was in order for this.

And the spot where the lips went in.

I started sewing the 1st layer of hair today. Man, these dolls do take a lot of time. I understand now why they cost so much! But much pleasure from it. I'm sure she will be in love.

volcano!

At Munchkin camp this week, Neve made a papier mache volcano. They made it erupt in class and they got to bring it home. So of course, we had to try it here too!

1 cup of baking soda

1/2 cup of warm water with some dishwashing liquid in it. Don't forget the dish liquid. we did the first time. It helps to slow down the eruption. Mix the baking soda and water together.

1/2 cup of vinegar. you can add food colouring to it.

Pour,

pour....

pour...

and if you really want to drag it out, just pour a bit at a time.

it was a fun little project. I think i just may have to get some coca cola and mentos though!

felt/vinyl pouch

Howdy!
here's a little pouch I modeled after something Neve had. It wasn't as easy as i thought it would be, but I'm sure the next one would be easier, should I choose to make them again.

Bit of felt and a bit of vinyl. I like to sew with vinyl. now that I know the secret of putting tissue paper over it before sewing. yep, it's that easy. A little harder to see when cutting it though. :}

The butterfly was cut out from Quickutz die and sewn on before I sewed the pouch together.

And now some other chit chat....
I spent 2 days going around town to find mohair boucle. I found some hand dyed by FibreArtists at Romni Wools. That place is amazing. I also found some crochet thread that I've been looking for forever. The wool is beautiful for doll hair. I went to my friend's place and she kindly and excitedly sewed it up for me. With the shoulder busted, I'm useless!. Anyhow, it looks just beautiful. I can't wait to see what it looks like all sewed up and the face on. So that's what I'm going to do......

Ice Treasures

A few years ago, I showed this ice treasure activity here (she looks so small)
During a heat wave like we are going through right now, it's a perfect activity to cool off. Ice treasures...

During the year, I collect bits and bobs with this activity in mind. little picks, brushes, eye droppers.

I also take little things like kinder egg toys, beads, pom poms, buttons, marbles, figurines, you name it and put it in a container for summer. Put them in water in a plastic container and freeze.
It's neat to see them try different methods to try and get them out. Try to have a mixture of floating things, sinking things, larger sizes that they'll have to work at and easier things like buttons and foamies to pick off easily.

I make sure I make up a few extra for when friends come over.

Back to sit in front of the air conditioner.

waldorf doll clothes

Recently, I ordered and received a Waldorf doll from Gillian at Ashtabeulah
Let me say that her customer service is excellent. She worked with me during the Canada Postal strike and kept tabs on the news when they went back to work. She had it sent in the mail before I could even tell her to send it. I love the doll, the consistent stitching, the way she stuffed it and the nose. loving the nose.
A little hesitant about finishing the doll, I made some clothes instead.
The patterns are from the vintage doll clothes patterns from my friend's grandmother. I've made the capeand doll carrier already.
Here are some flannel PJs.

It matches the eye mask I made for Neve last year. it's too small, but we discovered it the other day and it should fit her doll.

Here is the doll dress. Same pattern for all three tops, just the length is adjusted.

The bottoms were supposed to be bloomers with elastic legs, but I sewed them up before reading the "add the elastic before sewing the leg seams" part. So now they are bike shorts.

My favorite is this yellow orange suit.

A bit of gold bling to fancy it up.

Much fun sewing these. i bought a new pattern with a fancy dress and pjs and bathrobe. Maybe I'll get to sew them up if I get my husband to cut it out. I don't think i can do that yet with the arm in the sling.
I've been around my hood trying to find mohair boucle, I'll have to go down town. yikes!

mushroom pouch

Here's a pouch to house all those mushrooms...

I'm cheating here a little.. i just put the toadstool fabric on top.

I think a smaller size will be suitable for the mushroom match up game.

?this week, we met up with a friend and her dogs. found the perfect clearing for a picnic.

and the walk back.

the kids had fun picking cucumbers. it's bigger than her head and she ate the whole thing!

Himself can always be found watering or eating the produce.

Yesterday, I went on a sewing rampage and sewed up 3 outfits for a new Waldorf doll I bought for Neve's bday. more on that next post. I'm glad I did it, as I dislocated my shoulder this evening and had to go to hospital to get it put back in. It's an old injury from high school, but the last time it came out was 7 years ago. yep, it still hurts when it happens. It only came half way out, so it was awkwardly parallel to the ground. my left arm is hurting from holding up the right. yes, the right. I'm right handed. But I can still hand sew with my arm close to my side. The kids are going to day camp so I should be able to rest a few hours a day. wish me luck.

Mushroom Match Up!

Here's a matching game I made up? Altered? Embellished? Expanded?

Mushroom Match Up! It has 2 levels. One for the 2 year old who is learning colours. The top of the small mushroom matches the dots and stem of the big mushroom.

As the child grows and begins to count and learn numbers, they can match the numeral and the dots, but still use the matching colours to confirm their answer.

And they look so nice and shiny.

Tomorrow, I will show you the pouch that i made to carry them in. All games need a pouch.

Waldorf Inspired Summer Swap!!!

So on Saturday, I finally received my swap items! (Canada post strike/lockout tribulations) And what fun it was!!

After supper, I handed the kids one thing at a time to unwrap. it was like Christmas.

A few things got jumbled in the box, so I looked up this One Hook Wonderpost to see what was what.

We had fun admiring the treasures and setting them all up. But sometimes, the bubble wrap is too tempting!

In a heat wave here. DH put in the air conditioner in my attic sewing room. I think I want to live up there. We will find excuses to hang out there during the day. If we ever stay home long enough. Not complaining, but I want to have a day of not watching the clock. It's summer for goodness sakes!

happenings and a pouch

Hi All...
how goes? Many sunny days spent close to water around here. I did get to sew tonight for a short time. This pouch, and 2 others not sewn/shown, have been in my head for a few days.
A little pouch for a boy who likes his Lego mini Figures and has trouble leaving the house without one.

Now it can be safely attached to his belt loop for hands free playing. The vinyl pockets can be for pictures, drawings, some ID. Anything that doesn't risk falling out.

I don't know about where you are, but my succulents are going crazy this year.

Look how tall that chick is. And flowering too.

We've not had a lot of rain or humidity lately. Could that be the right combination?

I think that combo has made my daughter grow too. She grew almost an inch in 2 weeks. Maybe that's why she's been so cranky. :} Good thing it's summer and she's wearing shorts and skirts.
A trip to the Art Gallery of Ontario.

A stop into Lee Valley today. Tonight, I cut and began sewing clothes for little Christmas Elves. Yes, you heard me right. Last year, I swore I would start Christmas things in the summer. It' s a perfect craft for parks, playgrounds and kid watching outside.

And a bit of a swing! I had to get off, it was making me motion sick. Lame eh?

This lovely linen printed pouch and crochet goodies were making their way from Australia, but got interrupted by the Canada Post strike. Now that the strike is over, it's starting to feel like Christmas here.
The crochet flower is very intriguing in it's making. i still haven't figured it out. Nice indeedy.
Thanks Angelina for the giveaway. It's going to be used for something special to be sure.

I finally received one of the birds from Tanja at Watermellish Another parcel from Australia. (sidenote: When I was a papercrafter, there was a community with a lot of stampers from England. Seems this Waldorf inspired, home schooling, creating back to nature kind of crafting has found me a nice community of Aussies. Kinda cool)

Here is her inspiration:
"Tanja (Australia) of the blog Watermellish says of her birds: [They] were inspired by the dozen or more families of Fairy Martins which live under our verandah. I made some wee birds from a modified Spool Bluebird pattern. I shrunk the pattern and changed the shape of the tail. I also designed, knit and felted a little nest for each of my swapees based on the bottle-shaped mud nests these birds create."

After such lovely packages, my son gathered up our little collection of birds sitting about.

veggin'

Yesterday, we visited our "veggie Garden". Actually, some rows of veggies we were lucky enough to plant in someone else's veggie garden. Thanks Tia!

Much care and manure was given to this allotment. tee hee.
And many weeks later.. growth and food.

The peas were taller than the kids. so sweet and yummy to eat off the shoots.

And the radishes were ready.

We didn't mean to plant radishes, but the carrot seed package said to plant some radish seeds to help loosen the soil around the carrots and that you would see where you planted, because the radishes grow faster. Well, they took over the carrot patch.

And everyone loved picking them. Eating them, not so much.

Silly family enjoying the bounty of leafy greens. Some Calde Verde soup to be made for sure.

Yes, we all dressed in red on purpose. It was Canada's birthday.

another Maisie

Another Maisie to add to the pile of Maisie's I've made. ( doll comes from "More Softies Only a Mother Could Love")

It has been the gift to give to Neve's friends for their birthdays. This little girl requested something red and was quite excited when she saw what it was. She was in the know with the earlier birthday girls and their presents.
I usually give some hair clips and a little coin purse, if time allows. Guess there wasn't time for the purse this time.

Neve drew a picture on canvas with fabric markers. It is a cluster of toadstools and some gnomes. It's the first time she went outside of her people and rainbow themes. I have no idea what the recipient would do with it, but it was accepted enthusiastically. ( I can't believe I spelled that correctly the first time)

Home Made Ice cream

This year, instead of sewing for the teachers and assistants, I decided to make home made ice cream. I use an electric ice cream maker we got at William Sonoma as a wedding present. I love it!

I use the basic recipe of 1 cup milk, 3/4 cup of sugar dissolved into it, then 2 cups of cream and 1-2 tbsp vanilla. Flick the switch for 20-25 minutes. The trick is the cream. I made some last week with whipping cream. Lovely. The stuff I made in the last 2 days was with table cream 18%. It was more watery when it froze, not as creamy, but still good.
These tags are Stampin' Up! stamps from years ago.

These stamps are from PaperTrey ink. I made different flavours by adding the ingredients in the last 5 minutes.
For cookies and cream, just let the kids have fun crushing oreos in a baggie. The strawberry was sliced and mashed with sugar to help it juice. The strawberry rhubarb was cooked down, cooled and added.

There are so many other flavours to make, but the trick is that if you have to cook anything down, it has to cool completely before being added. So it's a think it out thing, not a spur of the moment thing. When you feel like making it NOW, then it's cookies and cream, or vanilla bean. Oh, we have homemade vanilla that DH made a while back. Vanilla beans soaked in vodka for about a month. nice. the longer, the better. Then I scraped a pod into the cream as it was swirling around in the machine.

k, next up.... This basket was a steal at a yard sale for $2! I grabbed it and ran. It's a great size. I fit all the ice cream containers into it and then some.

And another tea pot cozy. I've made a few more colour ways. Fun Fun Fun. The designer that I got the sweater scraps from has offered more scraps twice now. I still have 3 bags, but I want to get more! Help me. Fun to figure out colour combos. I think this one is my favorite. This time, I used boiled wool suiting for the front and back. Hope it keeps the pot hot.

Whew, you still here?
School is out and I feel relaxed! We played at the sailing club until way past bed time. It's great to see them playing imaginative games. Tonight it was traveling to Portugal on the Hobie cat trampoline. But they came to the picnic tables to stay at a hotel. Hope the kids sleep in tomorrow. I know I will.

this past weekend

hello!
It's been awhile, but that doesn't mean I haven't been busy!
This past weekend, we went to Ottawa so DH could sail in an albacore regatta. Best part about this trip, I got to spend it with my friend from my undergrad days, oh so many years ago. Her daughter is the same age as Neve and they were the best of buddies.
On Saturday, we visited the Canadian Museum of Nature.
What a gorgeous building!

Pretty deep! Don't try this at home!

This is a 6 year old whale. It is 19 meters long. the adult can get up to 40 meters long! that's a lot of ocean!

Then that night, we went to a Drumming concert at my friend's church. We stayed as long as the kids could last. it was great.
Some Chinese dancers.

Samba Ottawa was an invigorating feast! busy people.

Then on Sunday, we went to Canadian Agriculture Museum
It was a working farm where they experiment with different techniques and procedures. For example, they had 8 breeds of dairy cows. A tractor museum with hands on things, and so many other exhibits.

Angora sheep. They were so used to being touched, that the mother pushed her head up to the railing for a little rub. Then her baby did too. I didn't touch though. I didn't feel like washing my hands. Again. lame eh?

A busy weekend indeed!

Canada Post is back to work! Yippee!!!! I'm expecting at least 5 packages. It will be like Christmas when it all comes in. I'll be sure to post.
Tomorrow is the last day of school. Lots of plans for the summer. Hope the weather co-operates.

roving butterfly bird mobile

I took my love for the roving birds and butterflies and made a mobile out of them.

I made them mini compared to the regular size and tried to stay within a colour scheme.

The wind was having fun blowing them in a circle.

And watching them from below gives the eye view of the baby it's meant to hang for.

I'm still working on how to tie the top.

hello all,
good news first.. my son won the contest for most original hat at the fun fair! He's so proud of his trophy. It was fun. I must take a picture of my daughter's hat also. The fair was a success, I was a tired lump on Saturday, thankfully my family was a little tired too, so it was an easy day and we'll find out the financial success this morning.

This is what we did yesterday....

A stop to the beach. We're so lucky to have miles of beach less than a 10 minute car ride away from here. And with that, there are different kinds of sand, water, activities and numbers of people who attend these beaches. In the morning, you decide what beach suits your mood and off you go. Rough isn't it! This is the time of year where I have little hand sewing projects in my bag. For when the kids are occupied at the playground of beach. Next time though, I'll remember to bring some thread!

Here's the final product. It took some puzzling, trying, cutting, sewing and perplexations to come up with this system/ I hope they don't judge on it being able to stay on your head unassisted. It definitely needs assistance to stay vertical.

Pixie Pop

Hi everyone,
Here's a great game for the kiddies that I saw over at We Bloom Here, who saw it at Kleas
(sorry for the poor photos, it was a dark, gloomy, rainy day and I was sick sick sick on the couch.) I don't think I even have this in a good story telling order, but here goes..
after making the pixies (most excellent tutorials in links above, find some kind of lever device. I tried the popsicle stick with a dowel, but this combination made the best jump for us. a nail file and a sharpie. Oh, i got the kids to spend some time making the faces on the pixies by 1st sanding a bit of the varnish off with the nail file so i could catch up with the hat sewing in my ill health. They really enjoyed giving them personalities. That activity in itself was amusing.

glue the same coloured pieces of felt inside the carton. If they get it in, it's a point. If they get it in the right colour, 3 points. Be warned, pixies will be flying all over the room until you get the knack for popping.

They spent another few days playing meeting with the pixies. Here's the mayor. He held a very long meeting for about a day. Long winded I guess.

The only picture of some faces. they look like they're having a good time. Maybe the mayor is talking about tax breaks and free popcorn.

Apologies for the lack of posts lately. I'm on the Fun Fair Committee at my kids' school. There are 3.5 of us doing the whole thing! Crazy. I'll be having a table there with my things. Luckiliy, I have a bunch of stuff leftover from another sale, so that's what they'll get. Ever feel that what you put on the table is not representing all that you can do? I don't have any roving/felted things. Only some birds. What about my penguin and owls and acorns and soap?ugh.

The fun fair will have a crazy hat contest. My son has decided he wants to win the tallest hat. If he doesn't, it should be the most original. It's going to be a sandwich, made out of foam. yep, crazy I am. After making a few little sandwiches and burning my fingers once too many on the hot glue, I called it a night and went to bed at 9:30. yep, woke up at 4:30 with a full night's sleep. So here I am. Maybe I'll have some breakfast now, the sun is coming up and the birdies are singing. :}

wool flower clips

I've had these done for awhile now, but forgot about them.

I had needle felted some shapes and wet felted them.

Then I sewed them together.

I like the zig zag stitch in this one

And a sheriff badge for the boys.

They look kinda big in my daughter's hair. here it is in mine.

I clipped it to my ribbon headband yesterday and people thought it was the headband.
I may even make them bigger to go with the fastenator fad now.

After a terrible Saturday weather wise, we certainly got our allotment of sun today. And by not doing much!
After a trip to our veggie garden for some staking and weeding, we came home to enjoy our own yard. I'm hoping that it will be used this year. Now that the kids are older, I'm going to get rid of the big toys in the yard such as the slide, kitchen, ride in car and see saw.
In it's place, I've rearranged some furniture. The eating, drawing, playing games area.

This tent. oh, this tent. I bought the stakes to make a tee pee and realized I really wanted more space inside, so I rigged this thing up. A bolt of fabric that was given to me years ago and some cafe clips. these things are awesome. I'll have to take a picture to show you. I slipped them over the bamboo and clipped it onto the fabric. done. It' not very strong though. The wind would wreak havoc I'm sure. working on a better solution.

Chicken on the rotisserie with mesquite wood chips. yum. We always brine our poultry for a few hours before cooking. This came off the grill perfectly golden.

As a treat, i thought it would be fun to have a marshmallow roast in the back yard. Because of city bylaws and the fact that we are on a corner lot with half the neighbourhood trudging outside our fence, we couldn't get a chimnea. So I got a wee portable BBQ and a small bag of coals.

We set it up and lit the coals way before supper was done. You know, no dessert until supper is over. By the time we were ready, the coals had cooled down. A bit of fanning was in order. Not enough.

So daddy got serious. After all, bedtime was coming.

Yes, success!

The kids had a grand time roasting them up.

Yup, we'll be doing this again. I hope. Hanging out at home in the yard is a novelty for us. Some fun times ahead.

I saw a tutorial on how to make a spin top from wooden wheels a while back, but I can't remember who did it. If you know, could you please let me know so I can give proper credit?

These are fun to make. And pretty easy. I think next time, i will paint the stick instead of the wheel.

3 reasons: 1) It's easier to paint the stick. 2) when the top gets played with and knocked around, I'm thinking that the paint will get chipped a few times on the wheel. 3) it's easier to paint the stick. yes, it's worth saying twice!

I bought 1/4 inch dowels, but they were too big to fit in the holes, so I drilled out the holes with a 1/4 inch bit. (DH has a drill press and it's fun to use)
I cut them into 2 inch pieces and sanded one end. (not pictured) Then i sharpened the other end with a regular pencil sharpener and sanded the point flat.

The spinning is a thing of beauty.
